‘Market on 9th’ is located at 943 S. 9th Street right on Philadelphia’s historic Italian Market – America’s oldest operating open-air market. A specialty food market by day, and BYOB restaurant by night, Market on Ninth offers modern American cuisine.
The boutique market offers specialty food items, sources from local Philadelphia partners, and the restaurant offers a seasonal menu with fresh, quality ingredients.
The interior received a full face-lift from the prior tenant. This included all new lighting, flooring, cabinetry, & countertops – all designed to look like they were installed a century ago.
The custom built tables consist of Amish-made walnut table tops, which were attached to FLAT Tech self-leveling table bases. Tables can be easily moved & leveled to match adjoining tables to offer a two-top or a twenty-top.
Inspired by the historic Italian Market that lies right outside the doors of this restaurant, the dining room is filled with historic photos. These were acquired from the city of Philadelphia’s photo archives, and printed & framed by a local frame shop. These showcase the long-standing tradition of food excellence in the Market.
The custom-designed coffee bar sits between the kitchen & dining room. During the day it serves as a take-out café for pastries & coffee. It’s home to the point-of-sale equipment for retail operations. At night, it serves as the prep area for the dining patrons.
The store front showcases the quality of foods that can be enjoyed inside. The walnut & steel slab sign was laser-engraved & epoxy-filled with a pearlescence silver. The door & restroom signage were made using the same process & materials. The original black tile facade was carefully hand painted with the brand’s cup & plate icons.
New lighting throughout the dining room & cafe offers a variety of options for filling the space during the day or night. Ceiling-mounted track lights highlight the boutique retail goods resting on the walnut shelving around the restaurant, while the brass & milk glass fixtures set the mood for dining at night.
